When the owner of Lady S asked Feadship to install a full IMAX cinema inside a 93-metre yacht, the engineers in Aalsmeer did not say no. They said: let us work out how. The result — delivered in 2019 — is the first and still the only IMAX theatre installed aboard a private vessel, and it has become the single most talked-about feature in contemporary superyacht design.
Engineering the Impossible
The challenges were immense. IMAX projection and sound systems are designed for purpose-built cinemas on solid ground — not for vessels subject to vibration, motion, and the corrosive effects of salt air. Feadship's engineers developed bespoke isolation systems, acoustic treatments, and climate controls that allow the IMAX system to perform identically to any land-based installation.
The experience of watching a feature film in IMAX while anchored off a Mediterranean island, with the gentle rock of the sea adding a dimension no land-based cinema can offer, is genuinely extraordinary. It is an experience available only aboard Lady S.
